STRUCTURAL DESIGN

The entire temple was built with Basalt rock, cut-out in length of ten foot of short width and up to one foot thick, these sections were interlocked in the form of pillars, beams, sections were placed above the grid acting as roof slab, thereon mud of up to six inches and lime mortar of up to two feet was placed above thus creating a firm structure which have lasted since two centuries. As the nature of chiseled basalt rock was not elegant, lime mortar was used to dress (Pilaster work) the mud walls, columns and other sections inter placed between these grids

LAYOUT DESIGN AND FEATURES

The Garbalaya and the Madyarangam (Antarala), Sabha-Mandapam, Parikarama and Gopurum all form part of the main temple area. Across the temple, was the open veranandah which involves the functions and activities associated with the main presiding deity – Yagya, Chanting, Bhajan and Kirtan, Prasad Vitran. The temple main entrance was from the East as per the Vaastu.

There is an open Mandapa to the North of Main temple which was associated with the Abhishek Poojan of Utsav Murtis in the past times.

The Dhwajastambha (flagpole) and the Garudsthambha are religious features of temple. The massive door soaring 30 feet into the air gives a hint of the glorious days of the temple. The temple complex features intricate sculptures and a unique structure. The gopuram with acrobatic animals and humans in myriad poses become evident. It is a narrow gopuram that tells of a style which doesn’t fit into the Southern temple idiom. Temple Gopuram has a “Sudarshan Chakra” on the top and has sculptures of various avatars of Krishna.

Temple… as of today

Some description text for this item

Currently the temple is using the northern entrance to approach for darshan and also for the exit. This is in contrary to the principle of temple Vaastu, moreover there is an eastern entrance which was blocked and structures which were built around it, permanently blocking the main entrance for the temple.

All the structures at the eastern side were totally dilapidated and in bad shape, it was resolved as a measure to the progress and development of the temple by demolishing the extremely dilapidated structures from that zone. To develop an eastern entrance for the temple, a grand entrance which used to be existing in the past, following the principles of vastu, closely similar to the north entrance gateway which is currently the entrance for the temple complex.

A burial ground was created by encroaching the temple land at the south eastern side of the temple, further structure was created interconnecting the burial ground to the temple. It was resolved to remove and detach the temple with any such structure.

There was structure at the southern side inter connecting the temple to tomb and mosque. It was resolved to detach the temple from any such structures. Similarly, the southwest side of the temple is a pit which has structure and being used as a factory (mirchi factory). Resolved to build an intermediate wall separating the pit and structure interconnect the temple premises. The Mirchi Factory ( Tenant ),  has since  vacated the  premises.

As a result of all the rectification work for Vaastu correction all around the main temple, the Parikrama was developed to make the temple walls independent and devoid of any negative energy.

Additions and later intervention within the complex were not constructed with the context and purpose of the temple and with the Vaastu aspects. The temple complex has been subjected to processes of degradation with time, due to neglect, Vandalism and lack of upkeep and maintenance leading to a situation in which it has become unable to fulfil the purpose for which it was constructed in the past.

These works were undertaken engaging labour force and manually removed the entire dilapidated structures layer by layer ensuring no damage is done to the connected temple and all the stone material recovered for reuse.

Water: The temple has it’s own source of water from this ancient step well (puratana bavi). The Sixty Five feet depth well was de-watered and all silt was removed. The well is now having fresh water. The quality of the water is certified as potable.
